I've been using household items like knives and such and they suck. Is there any power tool or anything I can use to cut the tin?

Answer:An Altoids tin is fairly thick. You could drill a few holes to make an opening large enough to allow you to cut away the top or bottom center of the tin with a pair of Tin Snips.

Answer:As well as using tin snips, for a different effect you can punch neat holes through tin with a Crop-A-Dile. It makes putting holes in things as easy as - here's a video about the tool and how to use it:
